Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name…. and they’re always glad you came!
Our family loves going to new places. In the 30 years that Cavin and I have been married, we have lived in 13 different cities – and three of them were in other countries! Each place we have lived has been a great place. We have loved each city and it became home to us while we lived there.
Never in a million years would we have dreamed that we would wind up in my hometown of Brewton, Alabama. Yet, by the Lord’s hand, here we are! Brewton is a small town in South Alabama, less than 10 miles from the Florida line! It’s a town where everyone knows each other… and cares about each other.
The town seems to gather at David’s Catfish most every day for lunch! If you get there around 11 and leave around 2, there’s a good chance you’ll see whoever you’re looking for! You’ll see people waving across the restaurant and asking questions like, “How’s your mama and them?” or “Are you going to the ballgame tonight?”
Josh Godwin is the owner and operator at David’s. He’s there most days for lunch and supper! He’s the one in charge, but he’s working just as hard as any of his employees. He’ll greet you by name and ask about your family. He’s one of those who genuinely care. I’ve seen him visit his customers – better known as friends – at their tables. I’ve also seen him give free meals to his friends going through difficult times.
On average, Cavin and I go to David’s Catfish at least once a week. It’s just where the town gathers for good food! It’s the go-to place in town to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, or take someone who’s new in town or just passing through. It’s the place that you know you can count on to have your personal favorite from the menu.
We were just there today for lunch…. As usual, the parking lot was full and we were greeted by friends when we came in. I ordered the half dozen shrimp with fries and a loaded baked potato. Cavin ordered the TNT shrimp appetizer as his meal. Some days I order the Chicken Express Sandwich and Cavin often orders a cheeseburger. Our son loves the all-you-can-eat boiled shrimp. Recently they have added Taco Tuesdays and feature Fish Tacos. You really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu….! They are called David’s Catfish, but they could just as easily change their name to David’s Chicken or David’s Burgers or David’s Shrimp…. They don’t have just one specialty…. it’s all good!
If you’ve never been to Brewton, you really should come and visit – or better yet – just move here! When you come, we’ll take you to David’s and introduce you to a few of our friends. We would love to get to know YOUR name! And we will be so glad YOU came!
