Sampling Atmore, Alabama

Sampling Atmore, Alabama

Sampling the South

pimento cheese at The Coffee House

It all started yesterday morning when my husband Cavin and I found a little unexpected time….    Due to the busyness of our lives, this is rare.  We exchanged a few ideas of what we could do on a Friday morning when gas prices are higher than we can remember in our 50-something year life spans.  We didn’t want to go far, but we wanted to go somewhere.

Home is Brewton, Alabama and frankly, we just wanted to get out of town and explore something new.  We hopped in the car excited about our mini-adventure and what we might find.  The car basically drove itself and we found ourselves smack dab in the middle of downtown Atmore, Alabama and we could not have been more pleased! There was a warmth in the air that was more than just the fact that it was a nice spring day with temperatures in the mid-70’s.   The Coffee House caught our eye and we just had to go in and see what they had to offer!   Cavin grabbed a menu near the front counter and we found they have much more than just coffee.  There’s a nice selection of coffee for sure, but they also have sandwiches, wraps, and desserts.  We settled on a sampling of the menu and ordered a house blend coffee, pimento cheese sandwich, and good ole cheesecake for dessert.

Even before our food arrived, Cavin and I were chatting about how much fun we were having on our adventure.  Being married now for 30 years, we know everything – and I mean everything – about each other, but the amazing thing is that we still enjoy being together.  We were thrilled with our “adventure in Atmore” and began to talk about taking more excursions to other places in the South.  Maybe others would like to hear about these hidden gem restaurants so they could try them for themselves.  What about a blog?  I honestly can’t remember who said it first, because after 30 years we think a lot alike, too!  It’s kind of weird but true.

About that time, our order arrived…. just as we had ordered it and better than we imagined.  The creamy, homemade pimento cheese was generously dolloped between two slices of lightly toasted wheat bread and came with a pickle spear on the side.  The house blend coffee was brewed just right and they offer complimentary water which I chose…. you know…. I’m 50-something now, and trying to be healthier every day!  Dessert was in the self-serve cooler and we found the cheesecake to be a great ending to a delicious meal.  I’d say our first stop at The Coffee House in Atmore turned out to be a great SAMPLING OF THE SOUTH and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to take a short detour off of I-65 to enjoy something simple, but satisfying.

Where will we go next?  Who knows?  The only way to find out is to stay tuned to see where our next stop will be as we SAMPLE THE SOUTH… one restaurant at a time!
